Welcome! Murphy First United Methodist Church is a place where we believe every person is made in God’s image and has sacred worth. You belong here. We belong together, with God. This is a church where you’ll find genuine community, discover how you can make a difference in the community and world, and come fully alive in Christ.
This website is all about connection—connecting people with God and one another. We think that happens in a lot of ways—through worship, serving our neighbors, small groups, and more. We hope you’ll connect with us, and join us on the journey.

We have two staffed nursery rooms on Sunday mornings from 9:45 a.m. – 12 p.m. for children birth-2, and 3-5. We also have Godly Play Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. for children K-5th grade.
We love having children in worship! We have a Children’s Time” every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month, when we celebrate communion. Children often participate and lead in worship. After Children’s Time, children can stay in the worship service, rejoin their nursery group, or attend Worship Readiness class for K-5th graders. “Worship readiness” is a time where we meet children where they are and help them experience and explore aspects of worship.
We observe “Safe Sanctuary Practices” in all our Children’s Ministries.
We are a downtown church. Please see map for parking options, including handicap access.
Communion and Baptism are the two sacraments of The United Methodist Church. We celebrate Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month as well as at special times, such as Christmas Eve and Holy Week. Because we believe Jesus is the host, we have an open table, meaning you do not need to be a member of this or any church to come to the table. We provide alternative communion elements for those who prefer gluten free wafers or individual servings.
United Methodists celebrate infant baptism as well as baptism for children, youth, and adults. At Murphy FUMC, baptism ordinarily involves pouring of water over a person’s head.
The process of becoming a member of the church can involve meeting with the pastor, confirmation classes for children and youth, etc. We welcome transfers from other denominations and other United Methodist congregations as well as newly baptized Christians. Members vow to participate in the ministries of the church through their prayers, their presence, their gifts, their service, and their witness. See complete vows.
Contact our pastor for more details about membership and baptism.
As Methodists, we trace our beginnings back to the ministry of John Wesley.
The United Methodist Church links churches all around the US and the world, pooling talents, resources, and efforts as it makes “disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Through our connection we can “accomplish far more than any one local church or person could alone.”
United Methodist churches share common beliefs and principles that guide us as we grow spiritually and engage with the world.
As part of the United Methodist Church, Murphy FUMC recognizes the sacred worth of all individuals, the immensity of God’s grace, and the wideness of God’s mercy. We welcome all. No exceptions.
We are part of the United Methodist Church’s Smoky Mountain District (45 churches, one district superintendent), which is part of the Western North Carolina Conference (8 districts, 623 churches, one bishop), which is part of the Southeastern Jurisdiction (across 11 states and 14 Annual Conferences), which is part of the General Conference (five US jurisdictions plus seven worldwide conferences). A vast and strong connection.
“The United Methodist Church forms disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections.” UMC Vision Statement, May 2025
